The Route 40 Plan for Ballard hurts small businesses with its significant lane reductions, addition of bus-only lanes, and loss of parking and load zones. LEARN MORE
The loss of travel lanes and addition of bus-only lanes in Fremont will further complicate the reliability of this corridor, especially considering the ongoing movement of the Fremont Bridge. LEARN MORE
Westlake currently enjoys reliable and safe bus service throughout the corridor. The proposed Route 40 changes will add unnecessary complications by significantly reducing access to adjacent businesses and residential buildings as well as impeding freight mobility. LEARN MORE

The Route 40 plan essentially eliminates parking and reduces load zones to a point where they will no longer be effective. SDOT has to start talking with business owners like those of us on Market Street who will be significantly impacted and go to work on a new plan.”

“The impacts of the current Route 40 proposal will be dramatic for my small business in Fremont. SDOT is trying to put in a bus stop that would completely block the front door of my small shop. As a woman-owned and operated boutique, with primarily female clientele, we need to have a safe place to conduct our business. We also depend on street visibility, which would be blocked by a potential bus. Furthermore, if Bellefleur is going to survive in Fremont, our shop needs the pedestrian-friendly, neighborhood feel that Fremont has worked so hard to create. The proposed bus stop location, along with the other planned changes, ignores the negative impacts to pedestrians, small business, the community feel of the streetscape, and threatens my employees jobs, and my life’s work. That’s why we are pushing SDOT to go back to the drawing board and truly engage with the community that will be affected by the proposal and create a plan that is grounded in reality and works for everyone.”
"For close to nine years, we’ve been reaching out to SDOT to help us improve safety on Westlake Ave N: no safe way to cross the street, speeding traffic and many accidents. "For close to nine years, we’ve been reaching out to SDOT to help us improve safety on Westlake Ave N: no safe way to cross the street, speeding traffic and many accidents. One good item in the Route 40 plan is installing a pedestrian activated crosswalk in the 2500 block of Westlake Ave N. But the installation of a bus-only lane is a “fix” for a non-existent problem. It won’t improve safety, it will increase congestion when the bridge is open and won’t eliminate accidents. We say to SDOT: No bus-only lanes. Listen to us and work with us to make our neighborhood a safer place to live."
